Bad Reading Habits Tag

bad reading habits book tag

Hello readers! It’s time for a book tag. This one is about bad reading habits. I can’t find the original, but Google says it was created by The Book Jazz on Instagram.

I’m honestly excited for this one. The rules are pretty simple. You just name a few of your worst bookish habits. I try my best to work on most of my bad reading habits, but I am nowhere near perfect at keeping up with that.

I have this really bad habit when I love a character from a book or series, and I think they might die. If I become attached to a character I really love, I will Google to see if they die. I can’t take the anticipation!

I also do this if there is a prominent character that is a dog or a cat. I cannot take violent animal death or violence toward animals at all. And I know many people are the same.

I was watching the new Superman movie for the first time this week. When the dog Krypto showed up, I looked at my boyfriend and asked if he died. He had already seen the movie, and he assured me the dog would be fine.

I have been trying to improve on this one. But I do have a habit of making a TBR post on here and then not reading a single book on it. I have read 2 of the 4 books on my February TBR, and I started a 3rd. So, I did well this month. However, I don’t usually do that well.

I love making TBRs every month, so I won’t quit writing them. But I am trying to stick to them more!

This is something I have always struggled with. I can be currently reading a book or watching a show, and I can’t tell you most of the characters’ names. I know them apart from one another, but names never stick.

When I tell you guys a synopsis of a book, I have to go to Goodreads to find the main character’s name. I’m terrible with character names!

After I finish a book, I go through this limbo phase where I can’t bring myself to start something new. I might even start and read 20 pages of 2 or 3 books before I actually read one.

I don’t always know what I am in the mood for. I’ll go through Goodreads and look for what to read, but I can’t always find something easily.

I think this actually happens the most when I previously finish a book I didn’t really feel strongly about, either positively or negatively. It doesn’t give me motivation to keep going.

Honestly, I have been trying to pick my next book and even sometimes start it before I finish the previous one to give me a boost. I need to try this more!

This is another one I have been trying to work on a lot these past couple of months. I am really bad at pushing myself to keep going when I am not really enjoying a series.

This usually happens when I really enjoyed book one, but then I like each book less and less. I keep the hope going that I’ll eventually love another book in the series.

At this point, if I am not enjoying a book in the series, I won’t force myself to keep going (most of the time). It really depends on the series and the author. But I’m trying to improve!

This is probably my worst habit of them all. I have a habit of joining a reading challenge, readathon, or read-along, and then abandoning it.

I think this comes from my perfectionist tendencies. I will very thoroughly plan things out with any sort of reading challenge. Then, I won’t stick with my exact plans, which causes me to abandon ship completely.

A way I’ve been trying to combat this in 2026 is the tracker that I told you guys about in my reading goals post. I printed the one with every single month on it to challenge myself to read more consistently.

In the middle of January, I was very busy and didn’t read much. However, I am still filling it out each day I read! I will be showing you guys my progress in my reading goals update next month!

I am learning to let go a little bit. It isn’t as serious as I am making it. I didn’t read as many days as I wanted in January, but I am still happy with how I did.

What are your bad bookish habits? I had a really fun time doing this tag and reading a lot of other ones that people have done.

Happy blogging and bookish adventures! 📚🦒✨

  1. Character death spoilers 🤯😂
I understand the points you’ve made though.

I share a lot of these bad habits the tbr is full of good intentions that come to nothing and I really need to get better at DNF’ing books.

  2. Oh I’m so glad it’s it just me that can’t remember character’s names. When I write reviews, I nearly always have to go back into the book and remind myself of what they’re all called 😳

  3. I can very much understand wanting to make sure the dogs and other animals don’t die in stories. Honestly that’s why I’m often wary of reading stories that have an animal POV even though I like them (because I super don’t want to see any trauma through an innocent animal’s view) There are a few books I hate that have done that to me lol.

Not sticking to my tbr, sameee!!

  4. Why do I relate to so many of these (cries)…. Except for the not DNFing series thing – I have the opposite problem of just abandoning too many series!
