Romance Reader Book Tag

Hello readers! It’s the month of love, so let’s do a romance book tag. I found this tag interesting because it’s more about your personal history with the genre.

Don’t forget to check out my Book Tag Masterlist for the 100+ book tags I’ve done before things one!

I am a person who really disliked romance for the majority of the time I’ve liked reading, except vampire romance. When I was a kid, I would DREAD when I was watching a movie and the love interests walked in. I always thought it distracted too much from the plot (unless the plot was romance). I really used to be quite an anti-romantic as a kid. 😆

I still don’t like romance movies. I find it too cringey to watch romance, but I have slowly come to love the genre in books.

The romance reader book tag was created by Romance Queen of Booktube and Reading Category Romance.

Do you imagine yourself as the main character when reading romance? I’ve been hearing lately a lot of people do that, but I never really have.

When it comes to vampire romance, I started reading those in high school. Twilight was huge when I was in high school, and I think it’s where my love of the subgenre came from.

For romance in general, I started reading romance after I tried Sophie Kinsella. This was 10 years ago, when I was 22. Sophie Kinsella is best known for the Shopaholic series. But my first introduction to her was one called Undomestic Goddess.

The Undomestic Goddess is a romance following a lawyer who is close to making partner at her firm, but instead makes a giant mistake that gets her fired. She then ends up accidentally working as a housekeeper and starts a romance with the gardener.

It genuinely surprised me that I liked this book. I only read romance from her for a long time, then I moved on to other authors.

Sophie Kinsella continues to be one of my absolute favorite authors. I was devastated learning that she had died back in December, but I knew she had cancer.

What author did you guys start the genre with? I really read very diversely when it comes to genres now, but back then, I did not. I didn’t even read contemporary much at that age.

If I could meet a love interest, it would be Fin from A Court of Sugar and Spice. He is my absolute favorite from any book I’ve read. He feels like the kind of love interest who prioritizes care and partnership, which makes him an interesting character. He also has a lot of backstory. He’s also a little unconventional looking, which I love to see in a romance book where most love interests look the same.

I would say my favorite romance authors are Sophie Kinsella, Rebecca F Kenney, and Jeaniene Frost.

You guys know I don’t reread books often, but I did enjoy my reread of the Night Huntress series. I just love that in this series, the main character is a badass. There is a love interest, but he is never there just to rescue her. As a matter of fact, he kidnaps her in book one.

I loved this series the first time around and enjoyed it the second time around as well.

If you are looking for something that isn’t spicy to start with, I would recommend the Bromance Book Club series or my first entry to the genre, The Undomestic Goddess.

Sophie Kinsella has a lot of really good romance books, and this one is one of my favorites.

I believe The Bromance Book Club would be good because it’s a series with many different tropes. The books are also funny, especially the first one.

There are sports romances, 2nd chance romances, a grumpy/sunshine(my favorite), a group of friends, men getting humbled, a holiday romance, a food one, a cat lover with a cat cafe, and also plenty of depth in characters involving abuse and other topics. I think the whole series has a bit of everything, but not in a way that feels forced.

My favorite is vampire romance, but I also love a foodie romance. Any books that center on food-related plots are a win for me, but I love to see it at the center of a romance.

I haven’t really read historical romance much. I am not the biggest historical fiction fan. For fantasy romance, I do like it, but it’s not my favorite.
