Let’s Talk Bookish: How I Got Into Reading

problematic authors

Hello readers! This weeks LTB topic was a freebie, so I thought I’d go all the way back to July of 2024 as I haven’t done one since May. AND, I suggested this topic!

I suggested a topic back again this month and it made me think about the two that I suggested last year. I did the book blog name post, but I never did this one, as I was on break at the time. You guys may know I took a big break from May to October and haven’t really been doing these weekly memes since I’ve been back at it.

July 12 – Prompts: How did you get into reading? Did you immediately love it, or did it take you a while? Who first introduced you to books – parents, friends, teachers? Did you grow up around book lovers, or did you find a love of reading on your own? Which books started your love of reading?

I personally HATED reading as a kid. This is so weird because history sort of repeated itself with my stepdaughter. She didn’t learn to read until 7 because she just didn’t want to do it. She is now 11 and loves reading.

Anyhow, I hated reading. We had required reading and I would try to read the shortest books possible. I really feel like schools want kids to read, but they really don’t try to connect them with stories they might enjoy. They only focus on reading comprehension, which of course, does matter, but there is no reason for reading comprehension if you hate reading in general.

When I did this children’s librarian course in college, I was told it was bad to connect a child with a book based on what they already like. That seems so weird to me? My daughter found a love of reading through something she already liked and so did I.

She is a lover of animals and therefore is obsessed with the Warrior Cats series. I haven’t read it myself, but I know it’s some sort of fantasy series following cats.

I found my love of reading through horror. I love horror movies from a very young age. My favorite movie as a little kid was Scream. Once I was 11 or 12, I discovered Stephen King movies.

My mom let me get his latest book from the store called Lisey’s Story after I had watched most of his movies. I still have that copy of this book nearly 20 years later, and I’ve never reread it. Should I? I really think I need to one day. Maybe I’ll read it in 2026, as that would be 20 years after I read it the first time.

It took me so long to read this book, but I ended up loving it. One of my mom’s coworkers gifted me a few more of his books, and I eventually started reading on a regular basis.

In middle school, I was reading Stephen King, Goosebumps, and manga. I also discovered a love for anime at this time, so I delved into the books.

I didn’t grow up around readers. My mom did have some books, mostly Dean Koontz and books about the British royal family. But I never saw her reading any of them. My dad was never a reader. He was more of a TV show and movie person. I am honestly both a reader and a TV person.

I made friends in high school that read books and we would get things from the school library and read them one after the other. Especially those with really long wait times. The first book we read like this was 13 Reasons Why. That book had so many holds on it and once I got it, I let every one of my friends read it before I returned it.

I always see people in the book community talk about their love of reading came from their parents and I wish I had that! But I am happy that I did manage to find the love of reading. I feel like this hobby is so uncommon and I now don’t know anyone in real life who enjoys reading, other than my child.

Let me know, do you guys have anyone you share a love of reading with outside of the book community?

  2. I loved to read as a child, and my favorite genre was fantasy. In school we had to read the boring stuff (how tractors work, or who Jefferson was), all the fun things were at the back of the book and somehow we would run out of year before we ever got to those. So I would sneak the reading in, during recess, or when I had finished my math problems. “the Six Brothers” was my favorite, (six chinese brothers getting into scrapes, complete with pictures) and Granny Glittens and her Magic Mittens. The teachers wanted us to read about Presidents and farming, I wanted fantasy. I still do.
My husband is numbers and slide rules, and his parents were not readers in any major form, so he never really got into reading for its own sake. My only regret in all of this is not having kids, just so I could read to them…=)
