November 2024 Wrap Up

Hello readers! November is over and it’s time to talk about what I read. I actually managed to finish 7 books! How did you guys do? I’d say I did pretty well compared to most of this year, not just in quantity, but also in quality.

I enjoyed every book I read this month and found some favorites of the year, which I’m so happy about. 2024 will not be a complete bust!

It started this month with scifi and ended with some cozy mysteries, so let’s talk about ’em.

Annie Bot Sierra Greer

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Annie Bot follows a robot woman. She is a cuddle bunny robot, but there are all types of them out there like maids, nannies, etc..

She does everything she can to learn how to please the man who owns her, but it never really works. Really, this book is about an abusive relationships that she can’t get out of because she is literally property.

This was such a good book and really felt like a literary fiction with a scifi setting. It’s sad, it’s frustrating, it’s hard to read, and I loved it.

Mislaid in Parts Half-Known Seanan McGuire

⭐ ⭐ ⭐

This was the 9th book in the Wayward Children series. It was an okay read for me.

I enjoyed seeing Prism for the first time because we had only heard about it in other books, but I wanted more of it, and this world with the dinosaurs was just a blip in the story. I mean, there is a freaking dinosaur on the cover! I was so excited to see the world with them in it.

I’m excited to see what we get from the last book, but this one could’ve been a bit better for me.

Interstellar Megachef Lavanya Lakshminarayan

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

This was one I randomly heard of and decided I had to read. I mean, it’s a food competition in a scifi setting!

It was an interesting read for sure. It follows two women, Saras and Serenity Ko. Saras was a chef on earth who has sought refuge on another planet because she somehow tarnished her reputation back on earth.

She then joins a food competition, Interstellar Megachef, and is met with a lot of disgust and xenophobia. This planet she is on is stuck in their ways and doesn’t want any sort of change.

Serenity Ko is an inventor who has a new idea for a product that involves food, and she employs Saras to help her make it.

There is also this, sort of, will they/won’t they romance between them. It was a really fun read and I can’t wait to see when book two comes out! I’ll be reading it for sure. Foodie books are my favorite, so I loved seeing it in a scifi setting.

The Family Experiment John Marrs

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

I finally got around to reading John Marrs’ newest book and it was probably my favorite I’ve read by him so far.

I did not realize that I needed to have read The One and The Passangers to read this one, and I haven’t read the Passengers. The Marriage Act is also set in this world, but it didn’t spoil that one at all.

Anyhow, we are following a bunch of couples who join a contest to raise a virtual child for 9 months, but the child rapidly ages over the 9 months from an infant to 18 years old. Whoever wins either gets a large amount of money and help to have their own child or they can keep the virtual one.

There is a ton of surprises and twists along the way involving every person competing on the show. AND I also have to say trigger warnings for EVERYTHING. I am not saying that lightly. There is trafficking, child and infant death, murder, and all types of other things, so please seek out trigger warnings before reading this one!

John Marrs’ never disappoints me, so I really need to read Passangers soon! There was a character in this book from that one and I had no idea.

Gift of the Magi O'Henry

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

I don’t remember when this was, but I most definitely read this as a kid. And I was thinking about it the other day for some reason. I thought this was a plot in Little Women. I still do think there was something similar.

This one follows a married couple who make a big sacrifice to get money for each other’s Christmas gifts.

Jo in Little Women does something similar to the wife in this story but not for Christmas gifts. I think that is where I was confused. Either way, I really loved this story and hearing it again.

Highly recommend reading this one! It’s super short, or you could just watch Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas this year because there is a retelling of it in that movie.

Sprinkle With Murder Jenn Mckinlay

I also started a new cozy mystery series set in a bakery. This one is specifically a cupcake bakery. Weirdly enough, I actually really hate cupcakes.

We follow a woman named Melanie who owns a cupcake bakery with her two best friends, Angie and Tate. One of the best friends’ (Tate) fiance is murdered right before the wedding, and she is the main suspect, so she tries to solve the murder.

In both of these books, I thought I figured out who the killer was and I was very wrong both times. Okay, I was close in book one, but completely off in book two.

I’m enjoying these a lot actually and there are 16, so I’ll be trying to make it through the series in December and in 2025. I miss reading these types of books!
