Tell Me Something Tuesday:Reading Unfinished Series

Hello readers! It’s Tuesday and time for a tell me something Tuesday post. I am really curious what your opinions are on this one. Do you start series if you don’t know when it will end? What if it never gets an ending?

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly meme created and hosted by That’s What I’m Talking About. Each week there is a prompt to talk about. If you would like to participate, you need to fill out this Google Form, and the prompts will be sent to your email bimonthly.

Prompt: Will you start a series if you know it probably won’t be finished?

I am honestly so weary of starting series in general if there aren’t more books in the series. But, in the case of series that may never be finished, I really hate the unknown.

One that I have started is Game of Thrones. I actually own 3 books in this series because I do want to read it.

BUT, the motivation to continue is nonexistent because I don’t know if it will ever be finished. Let’s be honest here, George RR Martin is 75. And he hasn’t written a book in this series since the early 2010s.

Also, there are supposed to be TWO more. Again, he is 75. Will he be able to write these within the rest of his lifespan? I have no idea.

Of course, it could end up being the case where someone else finishes it after he dies, but I still won’t be holding my breath on that one.

I kind of have the same feeling about the Stormlight Archive. I mean, I know that Brandon Sanderson will finish that series. But, that series won’t be done until I’m in my late 40s at the rate they come out. I don’t want to have to reread the books for the last one. Those books are HUGE.

One series that I have never started is the Kingkiller Chronicles. Similarly to Game of Thrones, fans of this series have been waiting over a decade for book three.

Isn’t is so crazy that there are people like George RR Martin or even J RR Tolkein who only have the one world they ever write in, and then there is Brandon Sanderson pumping out mulitple books a year in different series?

For me, I like to start series once they are nearly or completely finished. I don’t really enjoy rereading as you guys know. And, I really love being immersed in a series while reading it all within a certain time frame, when I can.

I have been burned by too many TV shows where they ended out of nowhere. I can’t just not have an ending to a story. It would bother me too much.

  1. I have all the published books for all three of these series and another couple of unfinished fantasy series and I decided at one point that I wouldn’t begin a new series until it was complete. That resolution didn’t last long but it does annoy me when authors don’t finish things. I know that some people say that authors aren’t under any obligation to write but I feel that there should be a bit of thought for all those readers who bought into those worlds. Unlike a lot of people, I quite liked the ending the for the TV series of GOT so at least that one is done as far as I’m concerned. I don’t think that I will read any more of the stormlight archive though as I think the time line is soooooo long.

  2. This is what massively puts me off starting The Name of the Wind even though it’s been sitting on my bookshelf for years
