Hello readers! Today is Friday and that means it’s time for Let’s Talk Bookish. I know I took a little break there, but I am not taking a long hiatus again. I promise!
Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was created by Eternity Books and is currently hosted by Book Nook Bits. They also created the thumbnail I used. Every Friday, bloggers write posts discussing the topic of the week.
Prompts: With pride month in June, Black history month in February, Women’s history month in March, and so many more, themes related to race, identity and social justice hold a lot of significance for many communities. There are often reading challenges set around these themes as well. Do you ever read along with monthly themes? How do you think this helps with diversifying reading? And what about the rest of the year?
I’m not saying that I never do these monthly themes, but I really don’t love the idea of them in the grand scheme. The biggest negative is too many people will only read from that group within those months, which isn’t good! If you only read black-authored books in February, LGBT books in June, and so on, are you really trying to read more diversely?
I personally like challenges that are a bit more specific like the Read Harder challenge set by Book Riot each year. I remember a few years ago one of the challenges was to read a sci-fi book by a black author.
I think if people are to do those monthly themed TBRs, they should try to utilize that time to find new authors they think they’ll really love! When so many people participate in readathons like Blackathon in February, any other reader could watch along and find all sorts of new books to read by authors they’ve never heard of.
However, if you follow people who are from that specific group, you wouldn’t have any sort of a hard time reading from that group of people in the first place.
On one side, if you only read books by that group in that month, you might as well just not do it at all. On the other side, if you use those months to find new authors you like, new creators you like, and new books you’ll love, I think those months can be very beneficial to the reader and that community.
