Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

Unpopular Opinions Book Tag graphic | book blogger hot takes

Hello readers! It’s time for a book tag. This one centers on unpopular opinions. Last week’s LTB was kind of similar to this topic, so I thought I’d redo this tag. It’s been about 4 years since I did it last.

This tag was created by Booktuber The Book Archer, so please check her original video out if you haven’t!

I have a few extremely popular books I’ve read that I am genuinely baffled when I find that the overall majority loves them.

I mentioned Divine Rivals in my LTB this past week, but another I can say is Outlander.

I only read half of this book, but that was over 300 pages. Nearly every sexual scene I read was coerced and it made me really uncomfortable. The FMC Claire would repeatedly say no and Jamie would just do it anyway.

I quit the book when I got to the part where he beat the hell out of her and then admitted to enjoying it later on.

You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight Kalynn Bayron

This one is a YA thriller where people start to get killed off one by one at a camp. I loved this book so much and I see why other people didn’t.

I think if you like 80’s horror movies, you will really enjoy this. Sometimes the endings were a bit crazy or out of nowhere in those movies and this is like that, too.

I have been a horror movie fan my entire life and really love the classic 80’s horror movies, so this was amazing for me.

Shadow and Bone

I don’t think this is an unpopular opinion, but Shadow and Bone.

I just don’t think the end of this love triangle (square?) made even a little bit of sense. The one she didn’t end up with is the best character in the whole series.

Maybe the author wanted to make a book out of that character? I would love to know Leigh Bardugo’s thoughts on this.

I read pretty broadly, but a genre I never reach for is space opera, which is a sub genre of scifi or historical fiction. Historical really isn’t a genre per se, but I don’t read any sub-genre of historical very often.

One would be Riley Sager. I have read 4 books by him and have vastly different opinions on each one, so I decided to just stop trying.

Another is Emily Henry. I mentioned her in my LTB post last week, too. I like her books, but not the romances

Cassandra Clare. I’ve read the entire Mortal Instruments series, but cannot seem to really enjoy them. I have a copy of Clockwork Angel and I’ll probably still read it, but I also don’t have a lot of hope for it.

Ibi Zoboi is the last one I’ll mention. I’ve read one book I liked and two I didn’t. It really confuses me when that happens because I don’t know if I should keep trying or quit the author all together.

I really am tired of seeing the 2nd chance romance trope. It’s almost never done in a way I like.

Mostly, I am tired of seeing romance books try to smash as many tropes into the same book as possible. I don’t need a 2nd chance, enemies to lovers, with the only one bed trope and forced proximity. It feels gimmicky.

Credence Penelope Douglas

I watched a pretty extensive review of this book because someone told me it was an incestuous romance. Now, it may be less weird because they are step-family.

But what really has me not wanting to try it is the fact that she is 17 when she moves in with these people and then the step uncle wants to be with her right after she turns 17. Age gaps make me really uncomfortable in general, but this one is extra weird.

Atonement Ian McEwan

Don’t get me wrong. This book and movie are good. However, I do like the movie more.

Without spoiling anything, the ending of the book was a little open ended and the movie expanded upon what we didn’t get to see from the book. I really appreciated this when watching the movie.

  1. ugh second chance romances always suck! paired with the miscommunication trope, it just makes the read not fun at all. Great tag!
