Popular Books I Disliked: Let’s Talk Bookish

Let's Talk Bookish 2025

Hello readers! This week’s LTB is about my unpopular opinions about popular books. I have a few posts on here centering on this topic, but I thought it’d be fun to talk about some more! It’s always fun to see what people will say about the books I disliked or liked.

Happy Place Emily Henry

I think my biggest unpopular opinion is Emily Henry. I don’t dislike her books overall, but I do dislike the romances.

She sort of mixes literary fiction with romances, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I never enjoy the romances in her books.

I’ve come to learn that I don’t like 2nd chance romance and both the books I read by her were 2nd chance, so I might try one more book by her down the road that for certain does NOT have that trope.

I really loved everything about Happy Place except Wyn. And I believe the book would’ve been perfect if Harriet had just dumped him in the end.

Yours Truly Abby Jimenez

Another really popular one is Yours Truly. This one has such a high rating, and I just didn’t vibe with it. I think it had too many romance tropes shoved into one book.

I mean, it starts out as rivals to lovers, then adds fake dating, only one bed, and even forced proximity mixed with the miscommunication trope and misplaced jealousy. I don’t get it at all.

Divine Rivals Rebecca Ross

I swear I like romance books! I just never like the ones that are popular on Booktok.

This is the one that I am truly confused as to why I am the only one with this opinion.

I didn’t like anything about this book including the romance that flipped from hate to love very quickly. It honestly didn’t even make sense. Did they really have any real reason to hate one another?

But most of all, I don’t get the fantasy world it takes place in. And it may be explained more later in another book, but I felt like I needed to be told more here.

It felt like I was reading a book that was originally written as a historical fiction and then she went back and added in fantasy elements that weren’t really thought out.

There is a war, of course. Why is there a war? What stake do humans have in it? It really didn’t explain that humans were inherently religious. But, they are fighting this war between gods and I don’t even know why they are fighting one another.

Lord of the Fly Fest

For a book that I LOVED and everyone hated, I’d have to say Lord of the Fly Fest.

Despite not being the biggest fan of the original work, I loved this book. It is basically Lord of the Flies, but it’s a bunch of rich influencers stuck on an island where a music festival was supposed to take place, but was cancelled.

It seems from looking at Goodreads reviews that people either didn’t get or just didn’t like the satire element of it, but it was such a fun read for me. I am a chronically online person, so it was fun to read about these characters and sort of create my own theories of who each person was based on.

  1. 100% agree with Divine Rivals.. everyone was RAVING about it but I just found it wasn’t fleshed out enough and had more plot holes than a sieve 🙄

  3. Great post! Emily Henry is an author that I’ve been wanting to read for years (since her first book came out actually!) but I keep putting off reading her books because, I think I might not enjoy them. She’s such a well loved author but I’ve started to see more people come out saying they don’t enjoy her “romances” and that they all kind of become the same in the end. I’ve not heard of Lord of the Fly Fest but it sounds like an interesting premise. Glad that you enjoyed it! Thanks for joining LTB this week 🙂

  4. I personally LOVED Divine Rivals because I adored the romance, and like you said, I never thought they hated each other, to me they thought they did. But I made that explanation, it was never stated in the book. And I do agree with what you said about the fantasy elements not being explained or developed, that was my main criticism of the duology as well

  5. Ha ha! I liked Divine Rivals, but you can’t think too closely about the world building…
