Hello readers! Welcome to my unpopular opinions post. I have never really done a post like this before, besides just telling you guys tropes I like and don’t like in books. Don’t worry, none of these will be super negative or anything!
What is your most unpopular opinion?
Age Gaps
Out of all the popular romance tropes, this one makes me the most uncomfortable. Maybe it’s because I’m approaching 30 or maybe it’s my daughter being 10 now. I’m not sure really. Once someone says its a forbidden romance or an age gap, I am less interested in the book. I know sometimes a forbidden romance isn’t an age gap, but still.
If the gap is 10 years apart, or involving a teen, I am opting out of that book unless both characters are over 30. I don’t see why anyone would want to date someone that far apart in age from themselves.
Second Chance Romance Trope
I feel like this trope is so toxic. Half the time, the reasoning for the two people breaking up before is not even one that makes sense. For instance, in Happy Place. The MMC chose to miscommunicate and break up with the FMC and I’m supposed to believe the FMC would just look past it and take him back?
Another I really didn’t love was the 4th Bromance Bookclub book. The FMC just took advantage of the MMC for the entire book and I was supposed to be conviced they were actually in love all along? No.
It can be done well when the two were never together but just knew one another. But when they broke up in an unforgivable way, it’s so unrealistic to think the two would end up together. Especially when we aren’t shown how this relationship would really work when it didn’t the first time around.
Book to Movie/TV Adaptations
I really don’t think adaptations of popular romance books are necessary. I don’t think many of them like ACOTAR will translate well on screen. For instance, Twilight was adapted and every teen who loved it was made a mockery of when I was that age. Those movies were so badly made.
Also, in books we get to see the character’s personal thoughts and we only rely on words and actions in adaptations.
Pretty Books
Don’t hate me, but I don’t care to own really beautiful books. I don’t care (most of the time) if my series match. I own so many series where the covers don’t match and half the books are paperback when others are hardcovers. I only own ONE book with sprayed edges and it’s Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I didn’t even buy it because it had the edges, it just had them.
I don’t care what other people do! They can own all the pretty editions. I totally get the appeal, but I don’t care to have them myself.
Honestly, I prefer to own paperbacks and most of those special editions are hardcover.
Disliking Popular Books
I’ve noticed over the past 10 years as the book community has gotten bigger, hate content has become very popular. I really don’t like when people who dislike every single popular book thinks that they are superior. And then, if anyone likes that book they read, they just have bad taste. Not every book has to be a literary masterpiece to be good. It doesn’t have to have perfect writing to be a good story.
It is honestly the reader version of pick me energy and I hate seeing it.
Stickers
I will go out of my way not to buy a book if a permanent sticker is on it. I don’t care what celebrity put that book in their book club. No disrespect to Reese Witherspoon or whoever else, but I really don’t care what books they are reading.
Why Choose Romances
I have read my fair share of why choose romances at this point. I really don’t love when there is just the FMC and she has 3+ boyfriends or mates. I prefer when everyone is with one another. It’s just more realistic for me than one girl having a golden 🐱 that every man is just addicted to.
YA and Middle Grade Books
You are never too old to read YA or Middle Grade books! I don’t think any of us should limit what we read based on our age. This may not actually be unpopular.
Mono-Genre Readers
Every time I go into Twitter, which is not often anymore, I see hate toward people who only read one genre. I mean, I am the exact opposite and read almost every genre. And I don’t get why those who only read books with smut in it or only read fantasy books are bullied.
I saw someone on Twitter the other day say that people who only read smutty books are porn addicts. Like? The people who read only one genre are not hurting anyone.
