Childhood Book Tag

Hello readers! It’s tag Thursday. I chose this tag because nothing reminds me of my childhood more than Christmas. Can you relate?

The Childhood Book Tag was created by Rivermoose-Reads. As always, I found this tag on Zeezee With Book’s masterlist. Thats not only a great place to find tags, but also Zeezee always credits the creator when most people on here do not.

First Book you remember reading on your own?

Well the first books I really remember reading are Dr. Seuss. I remember reading Oh, the Places You’ll Go much more than others.

First book you remember having your parents read to you?

My mom thought I could actually read because she read this book to me so much. I picked up the book, and turned to each page which ‘reading’ it and in reality I had just memorized the book.

I don’t remember doing this, but that is what I’ve been told happened.

Book you read because of your parents? Because of a friend?

My mom doesn’t read much, but she does like Dean Koontz. I read one of his books in my early teens. He just isn’t for me. I have read another one of his books, but still.

I might try another one in the future, but honestly I’m not sure.

I read this one because of my husband. He sometimes will ask me to read books that he has read or read books to see if I think he will like them.

He really enjoyed this show, so we read the book. I didn’t enjoy it one bit. It felt like I got the middle of a story. It had so many things in it that people were doing like this Chinese thing where they would throw sticks or coins and I really didn’t understand it. It wasn’t explained at all and I felt that about a lot in the book.

Favorite book from school?

I really love this book. It’s probably my most read book of all time. A Christmas Carol is so underrated. Sure, lots of people have read it, but how many people deeply enjoy it?

Favorite book in elementary school?

Back in elementary school, I only read for AR points. I really did not enjoy reading. But, I did read these Nate the Great books and they got me the exact number of AR points that I needed.

In Middle School?

Other than Stephen King, in Middle School I read a lot of manga. Death Note and Naruto were among my absolute favorites, though I still haven’t finished that series.

In High School?

On of my absolute favorite series was Cirque Du Freak. This is technically a middle grade series, but I didn’t discover it then.

This is a horror series following a boy who makes a deal to be turned into a vampire to save his friend. We follow him over the course of many decades as a child vampire. And, that ending was one I have not seen before or since. It was crazy.

Book you gave up on as a kid that you’d like to revisit?

I tried to read this book when I was a kid and really didn’t like it. However, I did try it before I was a reader. I don’t even remember what it was that I didn’t like about it.

One of these days I will try this book again. I think my daughter actually owns it, so I’ll borrow it from her.

Book you checked out from the library most as a kid?

I have never been in the habit of rereading books and especially didn’t do it as a kid. I could say maybe one of the Goosebumps books? I read a ton of those in middle school.

Book you made all your friends read?

I remeber getting this book from my school library when I was in 11th grade and handing it out to about 5 or 6 friends before I gave it back. It was so popular when I was in school.

I know it was turned into that show on Netflix a few years later and it really made me see all the flaws in this story. I stopped watching after season 2 and have no interest in going back. I feel like they tried to turn it into Degrassi or something.

The book that made you love reading?

Since I was about 5, I was a fan of horror movies and eventually became a fan of Stephen King movies. Then, my mom told me he was an author and I tried Lisey’s Story.

I still even own the copy of the book I have, but it is so beat up. It came out in 2006, so I would’ve been 11 or 12. I loved reading all his books at that age and fell in love with reading from there.

Favorite middle grade read?

I would say anything by Alex Gino. I should just make a post of my favorite middle grade books because I genuinely have so many.

Favorite YA read?

Most recently, Lord of the Fly Fest. Seriously, I love how messy this book is. It’s a retelling of Lord of the Flies, but the characters are social media obsessed, rich people.

So many people hate this book, but I loved every minute of it.

First long series you read as a kid?

I guess Goosebumps. I never tried to read them all or in order, but that series is like 50 or more books.

How did you learn to read? How old were you?

My mom said I was a reluctant reader, but I don’t remember it. I don’t remember not knowing how to read or learning it. So, I’m not sure.

How obsessed were you with the scholastic book fairs as a kid?

I loved the book fair as a kid, even before loving to read. There was so much non-book stuff to buy. I mostly would buy posters from Naruto or I had a Naruto calendar once. We bought some fake Harry Potter money from one and all types of other stuff.
