The Firsts of 2023 Book Tag

Hello readers! Today’s post is a tag, as it is Thursday. Can we believe it is already September. It’s almost time to have firsts of 2024. I will hopefully be doing this tag each year after this. It’s such a fun one!

This tag was created by girlxoxo. I saw it last month on Janette‘s (Wicked Witch’s Blog) blog and just had to try it myself. Check out both of their blogs!

First Book Read in 2023

The first book I read in 2023 was a novella in the Night Huntress series. I wanted to reread the series and then continue the books that have been added since I read it last.

This novella takes place before the events of the entire series and follows the love interest in the series called Bones (before he meets Cat) as he tracks down an undead serial killer.

First Book Reviewed in 2023

Well, I tell my thoughts on all the books I read in wrap ups, but if we are talking about Goodreads reviews, it would be another novella in the Night Huntress series.

I don’t review on Goodreads often anymore, unless it’s an ARC. Don’t get me wrong, I love Goodreads, I just get exhausted from trying to review every book on there.

Devil to Pay and all the Night Huntress novellas that are romances feel very instalove-y. The author shoud just make the stories longer and add them to the Night Huntress World companion series, in my opinion.

First Book by a Debut Author

I decided not to count Non-fiction here. If I did, it would’ve been Prince Harry lol!

Trang Thanh Tran wrote this really creepy book set in Vietnam. It is similar to Mexican Gothic in vibe. I think the book was just too much horror for me. I cannot do body horror and this book has body horror involving bugs. Absolutely read this if you are fine with body horror and are looking for a good book! I just couldn’t do it.

First Book by a New-to-me Author

Chunky is a middle grade (mostly nonfiction) graphic novel. It follows the author going through the process of finding a sport that he loves because his doctor told him he needs to lose weight for health reasons. The issue is, Hudi is very accident prone.

It’s a cute story for sure! It’s mostly inspired by the authors life. I know it’s in a series and I might pick up the rest of the serise one day. I’m not sure.

First Book That Slayed Me in 2023

I reread a lot of books earlier this year. In an Absent Dream is the 4th book in the Wayward Children series. I was dreading reading this one because I really didn’t like it the first time I read it.

However, upon second read, it has to be one of my favorites. I don’t know what changed exactly, but I really loved this book. I love this entire series, of course, but this one blew me away with how much I loved it.

First Book of 2023 That I Wish I Could Get Back Time Spent Reading

Sweet and Sour is a middle grade book I read on the last day of January. I really hated this book.

You know those books/movies that have a problem that can be solved by one simple conversation, but the main character is too stubborn and would rather just be petty? Yea, that is this book. She wasted the entire summer being mad about something the guy didn’t even realize he did wrong. You can’t fix a problem you don’t know exists!

  2. I love your answers to this tag. I certainly won’t be reading She is a Haunting. I think it would give me nightmares for weeks.

      1. Definitely not. The scenes involving bugs in Weyward were more than enough for me
