Contradictions Book Tag

Hello readers! It’s the first Thursday of September and that means that it’s time for a tag! This tag is all about books I love despite them having a theme, trope, or genre that I usually hate. I LOVE finding books that prove me wrong in my reading tastes. That is why I’m always going out of my way to read books that don’t fit what I specifically love.

This tag was created by Booktuber Only If For A Page.

I love this genre, but I didn’t like this book

I really love fantasy, but I don’t care for Lord of the Rings. I wouldn’t say I hate it or anything, but I don’t enjoy it much.

I don’t enjoy the characters, character interactions, or even the writing. I understand what J RR Tolkien has done for the genre, but I’m not a fan one bit.

I rarely read this genre, but I loved this book

I rarely read non-fiction, but I love memorits. The Glass Castle is one I have read 3 or 4 times in my life. It was originally a required read in high school for me and I went on to read it outside of school and buy it on my Kindle.

I’ve read 6 books this year that are non-fiction and I honestly don’t read them enough. However, I don’t always feel like reading them either. Let me know if you guys are interested in a post of my favorite non-fiction books!

I love this trope, but I didn’t like this book

I love a good enemies to lovers book, but I hated Red, White, and Royal Blue. The enemies to lovers wasn’t done very well, in my opinion.

There wasn’t enough relationship building for me in this one. Casey McQuiston is such a hard author for me . I hated this one, loved their second book, One Last Stop, and hated their most recent book, I Kissed Shara Wheeler. I don’t know what to think with their books.

I hate this trope, but I loved this book

I hate ambiguous endings, but I loved Into the Drowning Deep. I read this one rights at the start of my blog. I didn’t really like the ending, but I would say this is a favorite book of mine.

Mira Grant is the name that Seanan Mcguire writes horror under.

If you haven’t read this yet, it’s a horror book set on a submarine with killer mermaids. It’s pretty gory. It gets more gory as the book goes, to be honest. That was one thing I loved about it.

If you love horror, try this book! I would love to read more like it. If you like scifi horror, let me know your favorite.

I love this author, but I didn’t like this book

I started reading PC Cast when I was in high school. I have read over 20 of her books and I consider her to be one of my favorite author.

I tried for the Spells Trouble ARC back in early 2021, thinking I would love this as much as all her other books. I don’t knwo if I am beginning to outgrow her or if it was just that bad. The average rating on Goodreads is below 3.5, so I must not be crazy.

I really thought her writing had grown from The House of Night series to the Tales of a New World series, but this one took a giant step back. The character interactions were all cringey. The boyfriend character was rude and it was excused a lot. I will always criticize toxic relationships in YA books!

Usually, I love the characters of her books more than anything, but these ones were not very good. Her character growth and friendships are usually at the front of the story and she forgot to add that in this one.

I previously disliked a book by this author, but I loved this book

This author for me is just like Casey McQuiston. I really didn’t like my first book read by this author, being Pride. That was probably my fault. I have never enjoyed a Pride and Prejudice retelling. That book made me realize that.

Then, I read Punching the Air. This one follows a black teen who is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. Did you know black men are 7 times more likely to be convicted of a crime they didn’t commit? This book was terrifying. I cannot imagine being convicted of a murder I know I didn’t do. You would lose your entire life for that. This book kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.

Lastly, I read one of her middle grade books, My Life as an Ice Cream Sandwich, and I didn’t care for it. I would read more from this author, though.

I love this cover, but I didn’t like this book

I read this one last month and honestly picked it because of the cover. I knew it was mystery and romance and that cover was gorgeous. However, I really didn’t like this one. I needed more mystery than romance.

I don’t like this cover, but I love this book

This is another book I read in August. I didn’t know what the cover looked like when I requested the book. Honestly, I don’t like the color story of it.

However, this is one of the best books I’ve read this year. I left this novella wanting so much more. I have no idea if we are seeing these characters again, but I would love to.

It follows this fae/vampire King who isn’t the best. He is saved after a battle by this fawnie woman who nurses him back to health. As he stays with her, they start falling for one another. It’s sweet, it’s spicy, and I also love the parts about grief. Both characters have two dead parents.

I loved the characters, the interactions, the fact that it’s in the guy’s perspective, and all the things which are revealed at the end that I cannot say.
