Let’s Talk Bookish: Book Adaptations

Hello readers! It’s time for a Let’s Talk Bookish post. This week we are talking about book adaptations. I am a big advocate for watching the adaptation first. I’ll be watching a movie based on a book I read and I cannot stand how different it is and I’ll just be mad about it the whole time. When I watch first, I don’t have to sit through it mad.

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was originated by Eternity Books and is currently hosted by Book Nook Bits. The accompanying thumbnail was also designed by Book Nook Bits. Each Friday, bloggers craft posts where they engage in discussions centered around the designated topic for the week.

Prompts: What makes a good film adaptation of a book? With book to film adaptations, do you prefer to see movies or shows? What about other kinds of adaptations, like musicals? What are your favorite adaptations? Your least favorites? What upcoming ones are you most excited for?

I personally think a good adaptation is one that keeps the integrity of the story and the characters. I think an adaptation can change things for sure and still be good. Sometimes things cannot be translated well to video.

For instance, the Maze Runner movie changed the ending quite a bit, but I still thought it was good. I didn’t like how they took out the fact that Thomas and Teresa could read each others minds, though.

When it comes to movies vs show adaptations, I haven’t seen that many show adaptations. However, I do prefer shows over movies in general. TV shows can go more in depth into a story and movies can sometimes leave a lot out. Although, I know many books wouldn’t work as TV shows.

Like many people, I this was required reading of me in school. I was so excited when an adaptation was announced! I genuinely think this is the best adaptation I have ever watched. This is one that is nearly exactly the same as the book and was amazing to see it on screen!

The adaptation of The Lorax was great. This is a time where they changed the book slightly and made it even better. The addition of Ted’s story was a great add-on. Of course, this book is about how industrial capitalism is killing the environment and Ted’s story added onto the common person being oblivious to the issues by not questioning things.

I watched The Duff after the adaptation came out and loved this movie so much it isnpired me to read the book. This was so weird for me cos I hated this book. The story is changed, a lot. I’m sure those who loved this book before might dislike all the changes, but I think they were for the better.

However, this movie was HILARIOUS. This book was different. I just didn’t like the story or any of the characters, which shocked me.

Have you read this one? I saw this movie about 10 years ago now. One of my favorite actors is James McAvoy and that’s why I watched it. This movie/book is amazing if you like sad stuff.

I read the book many years later and the book itself sort of has an ambiguous ending. The movie adds onto the ending of story, which is truly heartbreaking. This is the perfect example of a movie adding things on only to improve the text itself.

Here is one that I absolutely hated. First of all, this is the 2nd book is a series. Why is the movie named after the 2nd book? I mean, I don’t think it would’ve been crazy to do multiple books in one because they are very short.

However, they did completely change the story. This series takes place over multiple decades and they tried to cram the whole thing in one. It just didn’t work. Sure, the person who is the antagonist is the same later in the series, but they skipped everything else, crammed it into such a small amount of time, and named it after the 2nd book. I’m not sure who they were trying to appeal to from this but it was not the fans of the books.

This one has two adaptations, the movie and the TV show. I’m not saying the movie isn’t good, but it isn’t true to the story. They smashed 3 books into the first movie and honestly not in the correct order.

Now, the TV show was great. I loved that Lemony Snicket (the character) narrated the show. This show took it’s time to adapt these books and it was really well done. Unlike the movie, it wasn’t as rushed. I loved Jim Carrey as Count Olaf, but the everally movie wasn’t true to the story.

As far as one that I’m really excited to see in the future, I would pick the Percy Jackson TV show.

Of course, this one already has the mvoie adaptations, which are not the best. However, I am excited to see the upcoming TV show. I think (most) of these companies have learned that they need to cater toward the fans of the books. I am very hopeful that this adaptation will be good! Fingers crossed!🤞
