Hello readers! It’s Tuesday and I have something new. Well, not new in general, but new to me and this blog. I really enjoy doing those weekly memes and was searching the internet for more, when I found Tell Me Something Tuesday. Between this and Top Ten Tuesday, I should have something to post every Tuesday!
Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly meme created and hosted by That’s What I’m Talking About. Each week there is a prompt to talk about. If you would like to participate, you need to fill out this Google Form, and the prompts will be sent to your email bimonthly.
This Week’s Topic: What are your least favorite tropes?
I’m not sure how any of my least favorite tropes I should mention here, so I think I’ll give you my top 5. The ones that will most likely ruin a book for me
The Evil Step Parent
I didn’t realize how toxic this trope is until I became a step-parent. I have been with my husband for 9 years now and he has an almost 10-year-old daughter. I met him right before she turned a year old. Choosing to date someone with a kid when you are 20 is a big decision. We have been through A LOT regarding my stepdaughter and I am now her only mother. Her birth mother chooses not to be in her life.
TV shows, movies and books all portray step-parents as the worst of the worst, especially step-mothers. There are plenty of loving stepparents out there that deserve to be portrayed, too! I can say as a stepmother, I don’t sit in my room at night thinking of how jealous I am of my daughter’s relationship with her dad/my husband or her youthfulness. That would be strange.
Miscommunication
There are two tropes I don’t think can ever be done well and this one of them. I can’t stand when the entire book’s conflict could be solved by one conversation. It is the laziest form of storytelling. I don’t understand how a couple at the end of a romance can continue to be together when one of them lied for the entire book about something. Your entire relationship is built on lies at that point.
Cheating Trope
This is the other trope I don’t think can be done well. There is no reason ever to cheat on someone. If you are catching feelings for someone, break up with your current partner. It’s simple as that.
I remember reading a book called Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson. This book not only has a good stepmother in it, but I loved the way cheating was handled in it. I love that the character considered cheating, thought about how it would ruin her life, and then decided against it. I understand that some people might consider cheating, but that doesn’t mean they have to do it.
The Diverse Cliche
I am always excited to see diversity in media, but when it’s borderline offensive, it might as well not be there at all. I’m talking about the smart Asian or the funny fat friend. Diverse characters can be just as fleshed out as non-diverse ones. If an author can’t do them well, they might as well just not try.
Best Freind Betrayal
This one is usually in middle-grade or YA books. It’s where the MC has a best friend. Not just any best friend, but a life-long one. The MC also has a bully who has tortured them for YEARS. Suddenly, the MCs best friend befriends the bully. I know this probably can and will happen, but it still sucks when it does in books!
