2nd Chance Authors: Blogmas Day 12

Hello readers! Merry Christmas Eve, if you celebrate. Today I wanted to make a post about authors I’ve read before and want to give another chance. I did a post like this before in October 2020 when I was on Wix and I did an update to those authors earlier this year.

Some of those authors will be on here again because I still didn’t read them, but others will be new. How many chances do you give an author before you just write them off? Sometimes I read them once, dislike their book, and never read them again. Other times I will read book after book after book needing to stop reading, but I don’t.

Neil Gaiman

This is an author I really want to like. He seems like he would be right down my alley. I love things weird and spooky, but I just don’t like most of his books. I have read 3 of his books, most of which I didn’t enjoy.

I want t read something outside of his middle-grade books. All 3 I read so far were all middle grade and that might be the problem. I’m really not sure.

Ibi Zoboi

This is one I’m not sure about! Zoboi was on my list in 2020, I read another book by her and loved it. THEN, I read a third book and didn’t like it. I’m not sure if the one I liked was a fluke or if I need to try another book.

Casey McQuiston(they/them)

McQuiston is another author like the previous one. I read their first book, Red, White, and Royal Blue, and genuinely disliked this book so much. Then, I read One Last Stop and loved it! It had everything the previous book didn’t. It had the romance, the characters, the scifi elements and the plot that really worked for me.

Then there was I Kissed Shara Wheeler. It was one of my most anticipated books of this year and it was just not good. It has the manic pixie dream girl trope and I hated every second of that. Where do I go from here? I’m not sure, but I will look out for their next book and see if I’m interested.

Josh Malerman

I’ve now read 3 books by Malerman: Birdbox, Malerie, and Daphne. Birdbox is such an iconic book and fil in the horror genre, but the sequel left a lot to be desired. We did get a big question answered in this book, but at the same time, the rest of the book was just not it. Daphne is a slasher book. I do think it’s the best I’ve read, but I still didn’t enjoy it much. Should I read from this author again? I’m not sure.

  1. Love this. I may need to do this in 2023 as well.
